The Benedict Year › Reading Backwards from the Pascha › Unit 4 · The Sea

Week 17 · 18–22 January 2027 · Hilary

Melito, first half

Unit 4 · The Sea: The largest unit and the heart of the year.

Session A · the reading

About 55 minutes. Open and read aloud before any framing: no introduction, no “today we’re looking at”. Scripture first, then the Father.

  1. Melito, On Pascha §§1–45, aloud and without stopping

Session B · the argument

About 35 minutes, on another day. Never both in one sitting.

Video. Exodus Way

Read with parts. Melito’s lines for Israel and for the Lord, if the child wants a part.

The Tile Board

Add a card: The lamb, and the Lamb (Melito), with the passage and today’s date. Pencil a line to another card only if the child sees one.

Books this week

Optional: one piece of media

Passio (1982), Arvo Pärt’s, a recording; a chant setting of the Passion if it does not hold. Watched together, with nothing said about why it was chosen; how the list was made.

The centrepiece of the year. Hammering and repetitive, built to be heard.
