About
Richard Verver, jcl
Canon lawyer, ecclesiastical judge and teacher, helping people and institutions find their way through the law of the Church with competence and care.
My mission
To empower clients with expert guidance and personal attention, so they can face canonical processes with understanding and confidence.
Canon law can feel remote and intimidating: Latin terms, unfamiliar procedures, decisions made far away. My work is to make it understandable, to protect your rights within it, and to present your case as clearly and truthfully as possible.
Since 2015 I have served as a judge of the Toronto Regional Tribunal, hearing marriage nullity and contentious cases. That experience on the bench shapes how I advocate: I know what judges need to see, where cases stall, and how to tell a story so that it can be understood.
I represent parties in marriage nullity, penal and administrative cases, and act as advocate for several dioceses in Canada and the United States. I also teach Introduction to Canon Law and Marriage Nullity and Procedures at Saint Philip’s Seminary in Toronto.
Before canon law I trained as a scientist and a teacher, with a master’s in chemistry at the University of Toronto and a B.Ed. from the University of Ottawa. I still bring that habit of careful analysis to every file.
I am based in Toronto and work with clients across Canada and the United States.
